Wen Zhengming's Mountain Stream with Calamus (Ming dynasty) exemplifies an iconotext in which image and text are mutually constitutive, creating an intertextual interplay that transcends the dichotomy between image and text.
明代文徵明的《蒲涧图及蒲涧记卷》堪称“图像文本”典范:在其中,图像与文字彼此共构,形成超越图文两分的互文互动关系。

A page from a precious 20th century edition of Building Standards (Yingzao Fashi) traces the material assembly of the Foguang Temple, which seems to find its diagram in the Chinese character 舍 (she, shelter), composed of the three radicals for roof (亼), beam and columns (屮), and base (囗), which is then reinscribed in Liu Yichun's meditation pavilion at the Upper Cloister.
陶本《营造法式》卷三十一所示一种典型殿堂剖面(“侧样”),除去右下的“副阶”,描摹了类似佛光寺东大殿的屋顶、柱梁与台基的物质组合,其抽象图解,可由“舍”字构成佐证:屋顶(亼)、木构支撑(屮)与基座(囗)。这一抽象构成,在柳亦春的金山岭上院云起堂中亦得再度铭写。

In the Bridge of Nine Terraces, Zhu Xiaofeng emphasizes the diagram of bare white walls and black tile roofs of Jiangnan's vernacular architecture. His repetitive extrusions of domestic roofs underscore the material processes of inscription-the iterative stroke, the spacing of graphic variation, and the play of typographic form.
祝晓峰在九间廊桥草图中强调了素墙黑瓦的江南民居图式。他对于民居屋顶的一次次拉伸操作,揭示了铭写的物质性过程:笔触的重复、图形变体之间的间距展开,以及字形形式的游戏。

Ramps rise and fall like mountain ridges and watercourses in Zhang Ke's design for the Xiao Feng Art Museum in Hangzhou; large openings frame contrasting views, blurring inside and out in a paratactic display. The rhythmic alternation is interrupted by a bridge volume spanning the entrance. The building itself performs like a scholar’s rock, inviting peripatetic wandering through mountains and waters and contemplation.
在张轲为杭州肖峰艺术馆设计的建筑中,坡道如同山脊与水道般起伏变化;大尺度开口将彼此对照的景观纳入框景之中,并通过一种并置式的呈现模糊了内与外的界限。这种节奏性的交替被横跨入口的桥状体量所打断。整座建筑宛如文人赏石,引人游历徘徊于山水之间,并时时进入沉思冥想。

Xu Tiantian's massive light tunnels in the Huiming Tea Space fill the interior with shafts of light calibrating the Chinese zodiac while, from the viewing platform on the roof, transforming them into earth marks that, like ancient lithic instruments, index the basic rhythms of nature.
徐甜甜在景宁惠明茶工坊打造的巨型光筒,其俯仰精准对应夏至日日出日落之间的太阳高度角变化,将光柱顺次引室内;而立于屋顶观景平台,这些光筒又化作大地标记——如同古老的石阵,昭示着自然的基本节律。
